The Working BSD Society has secured the weekend of 26-27 April for their 2008 Agility show which, once again, will be held at Newbury Showground, Berkshire.
The COmmittee would like to thank everyone for their input and positive comments about their recent show, which took place on the 31 March/1 April 2007. They have listened to all critiques and have taken steps to ensure that any problems encountered over the two days will be ironed out for 2008. The only part we have no control over is the weather. We just hope that the high winds we experienced this year will not be a problem next time!
They will, of course, be looking for Judges and Ring Managers so would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in undertaking either of these roles. They would also be delighted to hear from any Club that would be prepared to undertake ring duties on either of the two days. We can offer an excellent package for any Club offering their services. Interested parties for any of the above should be directed to: agility@wbsds.org.uk
On the Agility Forum, Helen Fletch, Chairperson of WBSDS, stated 'It is perhaps worth noting that both the Working BSD Society and The Belgian Shepherd Dog Association of GB are currently working together to send a team to the BSD Agility World Championships in Le Touquet in May 2007. However, although both organisations have run agility shows recently, we would point out that these events are not linked in any way and that apart from the BSD WC there is no other connection between us. We hope that the above will clear any confusion that may have arisen. '

A
new sport, aptly named, Jetty Dogs is being introduced at the All About
Dogs show at Brentford (Essex) on 12-13 May 2007. It challenges the dogs to
dash down a specially built 42ft canine runway and jump headlong into a
large portable swimming pool. The longest distance jumped wins. Dogs,
handlers and spectators really enjoy the excitement of this spectacular
sport and all love to watch the speeding dogs having a great time.
They equally enjoy the antics of owners who just can’t quite convince their
best friends to make that first jump (NO coercion or force is allowed, of
course).
Roy Dyer, Show Director, of All About Dogs, said 'I am delighted to be able to offer DockDogs the opportunity and the facilities to bring this exciting dog sport to Britain. It is a huge canine sport and very popular in the USA.'
Some of America’s top DockDogs trainers will be there to help get the biggest jumps and splashes from the daring dogs. The event will also be the debut of the first official UK club to the sport, East Midlands JettyDogs, featuring Jumpin’ Jack Splash. Jack is a black Flatcoat Retriever from Lincolnshire, who holds the European record with a 21 foot jump. Perhaps your dog can try to beat him!
Tom Kennedy, Founder of Chicagoland DockDogs, said, 'This is a dog sport that does not require extensive training and rules. The dogs run… jump…and have fun! I am sure once the people overseas experience just how much fun JettyDogs is, word will quickly spread and it will become a very popular activity for dog owners whether they have sporting dogs or house pets.'
Kennedy also noted; 'We have been working towards the debut of DockDogs overseas for a while now and The All About Dogs Show is the perfect Venue to do so.'
Prizes are awarded to all dogs that jump. Be it one foot, or twenty. All breeds, sizes, and mixes welcomed. Dogs compete against those of their own ability. Come and see this exciting new sport that has thrilled thousands in North America or even better bring your dog and be a part of the Debut of JettyDogs!
For more information or information on how to pre-register, please contact: All About Dogs, Brentwood, Essex. Tel. 01277-226624. Web site: http://www.allaboutdogs.org.uk

While
browsing the Agilitynet archive, Dave Roberts came across the Founding
History article, written by Peter Lewis. Much to Dave's surprise, he
discovered that agility had been invented by Peter Meanwell and members of
his own club at the request of the Kennel Club some thirty years ago. Peter
Meanwell and members of LGDS & ABTS spent many a night at the Pyewipe Inn,
planning the demonstration and then building the equipment at the green
club house which is still there. Dave was actually a member of the club at
that time, doing Obedience with my Doberman. He didn’t even know anything
about the birth of agility right in his own backyard.
After looking further into the founding history, Dave discovered that neither the late Peter Meanwell nor his Club ever received any official recognition - or thanks - for creating this internationally enjoyed dog sport. Being a proud Lincoln boy, Dave decided to do something about it. He approached the Club to see if they could hold a show to celebrate the 30th year of agility to which they agreed.
Thus the 30th Anniversary show was born. It is to be held on the weekend 29-30 September 2007 at the Lincolnshire Showground as, unfortunately the Local Council blocked the Club from using its training ground where it all began. What a shame! In any case, several of the original Lincoln team, Kevin Foster, Stuart Gillham, Chris Bell and Fred Welham from Yorkshire will be honoured at the show. Trophies will be given up to third place in all classes.
As Lincoln GSD only has a small Agility section - the majority of members do Obedience and Working Trials - Dave is hoping that other clubs and individuals will chip in to help run the show and even sponsor a class or two to celebrate the occasion. Trade stands are also most welcome.
If you are interested in putting something back into the sport via this show, Dave Roberts (Show Secretary) on tel. 01522-824049 or email: daveroberts_283@fsmail.net or Steve Osbourne (Show Manager) on tel. 01522-703352 or email: soco4547@ntlworld.com (17/04/07)
UK Agility have announced another new show, run by H J Agility which will be held at Kidlington, near Oxford, on Sunday, 17 June.
Hazel Horobin who started the club eleven years ago said, 'We thought it was time to give something back to Agility so hence the show.'
She continued, 'Stratfield Brake Sports Ground is a large place in a good location. It is very easy to get to from M40. A34 and A40 and has lots of walks and space to exercise the dogs. The parking is good as well not far away from the rings. I’m afraid there isn’t any camping this year but, if all goes well and we hold the show next year, I will be working on it.'
H J Agility is based at a place called Bunkers Hill, just north of Kidlington, Oxford. Things have grown in the last couple of years and now they have some some very enthusiastic members. competing at shows so watch out for those purple t-shirts!
The schedule can be found on Agilitynet. For any questions, email Hazel Horrobin at Hazel@hetom.go-plus.net

Show Secretary Shelley Christmas has emailed to say that they have lost the use of the No. 1 rugby pitch at the Norwich Rugby Football Club for their show on Saturday, 14 & Sunday, 15 July 2007. The show, however, will go ahead in the usual format. The only difference is it will be a slightly longer walk to the club house for cooked breakfasts and the bar!
For those who are hungry upon arrival, hot meals and other refreshments will be available on the Friday evening in addition to the usual Saturday and Sunday service.
If anyone has any questions, please call Shelley on tel. 01263-511306

The WBSDS and Dartford are
delighted to announce that they have been selected to host a KC Olympia ABC
Agility Qualifying Heat at their show on 15th & 16th September 2007. Due to
public demand we have decided to not combine classes 9 and 10 but to leave
class 9 as Special ABC agility - Combined Large Grades 1 to 4, and make
Class 10 Grades 1 to 7 (as opposed to 5, 6 and 7 only as it was before) and
therefore Class 10 IS NOW the KC Olympia ABC Agility Qualifying heat. ABC
handlers (Grades 1 to 4) will be able to enter both Classes 9 and 10 if
they wish but they must count each run as one of their "maximum of 4 runs
per dog per day".
The entry form has been changed to enable me to know who entered when. Any
entries received by handlers who have already entered Class 9 will be
contacted over the next two week period, by either phone or email, and
given the chance to change their entry.

Chippenham AC will not be holding a Kennel Club Olympia ABC Agility qualifying heat in September 2007. Newton Heath DTC has now arranged for this heat to be hosted by Dartford DTC (in conjunction with the Working Belgian Shepherd Society) at their forthcoming agility show on 15-16 September 2007.

For
al those going to the Colchester DAC show this Saturday, 19 May, please see
the below announcement from the Highway Office. You will need to allow
extra time to your journey for this road closure. If the diversion
leads you through Colchester central instead of the A12, it is estimated
that it should take you about ten minutes longer first thing in the
morning. The venue postcode is C03 8PB should you wish to find an
alternative route.
What's Happening Now?
Work to install the new bridge will take place between 17 and 20 May.
In order for the works to be carried out safely, it will be necessary to
close the A12 between Spring Lane Interchange (Junction 27) and the Crown
Interchange (Junction 29) overnight and at offpeak periods.
The dates and times of the closures are:
The A12 will be open in between these times but there may be single lane closures and ispeed in limits in force during these periods.
In order to reduce disruption to road users in the future, the Highways Agency will also be using the opportunity of the A12 closures to undertake maintenance work on the Boxted and Severalls Road bridges nearby.

Richardson sheepishly admits, 'I seem to have got my knickers twisted when
creating the Pairs Entry Form, and gone into numbers fatigue.'
The pairs classes for Tuesday should read:-
3 Large Grades 1-2
8 Large Grade 6
23 Small Grades 1-7 (This one was mistakenly listed under Wednesday)
The Pairs classes for Wednesday should read:-
32 Large Grades 3-5 (mistakenly listed as Small 1-7)
42 Medium Grades 1-7
At least Friday - and the schedule - were correct! A revised version will be appearing on Agilitynet soon.

The
schedules should be arriving now for those who went last year. They are
also available on the DiN web-site
www.dogsinneedagility.com,
and it should also be live on iSS later today. Although the schedule does
say limited camping, this is just a precaution and there is no need to
panic. There are more spaces available this year than we used last year.
iSS received their first postal entry this morning - and their first card from the Post Office for underpayment of postage. Please, please, please check your postage before sending off your entry. If you use a large envelope, a normal stamp will not cover it. If you use a lot of entry forms, the weight may go over. If in doubt, wack another stamp on.
If you are likely to be leaving home before the ring cards are posted out (estimated date 28-29 July (The Agility Club weekend) then please note this fact on the Header Form, where you enter your return address, and iSS will hold your cards for you.
Thank you, and see you there

This is a message for all Scottish handlers who compete in Scotland. AS you probably know, the 2007 Scottish Dog of the Year (SDoY) competition started officially on 1 January 2007. The final, which will be judged by Christine Robson, will be held at the Scottish Kennel Club (SKC) show in August. This year it has been decided that it will be for dogs of all sizes - Large, Medium and Small - in Grades 6 & 7 only.
To recap the rules are:-
Handlers must live in Scotland
Points will be gained by dogs competing in Grades 6 & 7
The points will come from the first graded Agility (grades 6 & 7) on the schedule of a Scottish show.
If there are no graded classes it will be the first Agility class that grades 6 & 7 compete in.
Only one class per day, as above
The first 10 handlers in the Large size gain points. 10 points for the first placed handler to 1 point for the tenth placed handler
The first 6 handlers in both Medium and Small sizes gain points. 6 points to the first placed handler and 1 point to the sixth placed handler
The top 20 placed large dogs/handlers and the top 6 placed Medium and Small dogs/handlers will be invited to compete in the final which is held at the SKC show in August
The start date for 2007 was the 1 January 2007 and the cut of date will be the 5 August 2007(Kingdom of Fife show)
Peter Elms said 'This is the premier Final in Scotland which handlers and dogs in the lower grades should want to aspire to. If anyone wishes to contact me, feel free to email me on peter
