I
was pleased to be asked to judge the fourth Adams Derby final on 30 July 2005 at the
Derbyshire County Showground. Before I start, I would like to congratulate all the
handlers for reaching this final held at Derby DDAC weekend agility show.
I set
out the course so that the first part filled the centre of the ring which left plenty of
space around the outside for me to set the speed section. Whilst the handler and dog had
to go at some speed, some handling was needed.
Thankfully the rain held off for the hour of the Final which attracted a good crowd from
the outside.
The
handlers had been given plenty of time to walk the course and consider their approach
when and if they reached the speed section.
The Competition
It was a very closely fought competition with some extremely good dogs ranging
from handlers and dogs only just competing like Alison Walker from Worcester with her dog
Sweep, to handlers who had since qualifying reached senior status, and Ron Oliver (aged
70 years) with his dog Olly.
Dog and handler no. 8 Janet
Thompson and Moss lead for most of the way until Kathrin Tasker and Chessie put in an
identical time of 24.89 secs. It was a nail biting time for both of them to see whether
they would run off for first place. It wasn’t until dog and handler Lynn Cusdin
with Tembo running 44th stepped up to the start line and put in a fantastic
run to knock .79 off the initial leaders to ensure her place as No. 1 for 2005.
My commiserations must go to Dave
Cooper and Tux who had the fastest round but rolled a pole.
This Final’s line up was not
going to be a simple decision as Kathrin and Janet had to run-off for second place. This
run-off was taken by Janet.
Congratulations to all of you. It
was an enjoyable Final to judge.
