Lucky dogs

The story doesn't always end with the hero/heroine riding off into the sunset but these dogs have been given another chance. We don't always know where they go, but when we do hear anything, we will try to pass on the news. This month these dogs found new homes, many of them going to agility homes so watch out them on the show circuit.

Dogs are featured in alphabetical order.

Happy Ending: Barney was transferred to Stokenchurch Rescue where he was adopted. They think he went to an agility home. (07/07/08)

BARNEY

History: After Barney was a stray originally taken to BDH, I was asked to help find a home for him.
Description: He is a tan & white, smooth coat JRT X. He is slim but well built, and is small/medium height. He is living in a foster home with another dog and two children. He lacks manners with dogs outside the home, but is fine once he gets to know them. Barney has an excellent recall and knows basic commands. He is very people friendly and very, very toy orientated.

BESS

History: Bess was bought as a working sheepdog puppy, but sadly she shows no interest in sheep.
Description: Bess is very loyal and attentive. An exceptionally athletic dog who loves playing with a ball. She is not yet house trained as she lives in a kennel and run.

Rehoming criteria:
Bess is happy on the farm but I feel she would have an even better life if her energy was focused into something positive. I think she would really suit an agility home.

Happy Ending: Brutus has been rehomed to a working home where he will be kept very busy hurdling sheep. (07/07/08)

BRUTUS

History: Brutus came from working parents but a working home has not been found for him. He was the first born and largest of the litter of eight. I was there when he was born and have his weight chart and some photographs of his earlier days. His mum was in pup when she came to stay with me and remained until the pups were weaned. The mum and her unsold pups were then returned to the owner who lives in a remote croft.
Description: Huntaways are generally outgoing, healthy, intelligent, athletic dogs with superb stamina, equally happy at home chilling-out on the sofa or in the byre, my own two year old Huntaway definitely prefers the sofa! A good Black & Tan, Brutus has white chest markings and one white front paw. The breed can be can be quite leggy. Brutus is not yet house-trained as he has lived in kennels with other Huntaways and Collies since weaning. This little lad has spent a lot of time bonding with the other dogs rather than humans.
Rehoming criteria: His new home should be an active one where someone will coax out the best in him, let him flourish and grow into all that he can be.

Happy Endings: Jack has been rehomed to a young couple. (07/07/08)

JACK

History: Jack was re-homed as a puppy but was not given enough exercise or stimulation and was returned to us at 10 months old.
Description: Jack is a handsome black & tan Collie. He has a good ability to learn and enjoys it. He is very food and is toy motivated. He is a very bright boy and enjoys being with people and wants attention but unfortunately has learnt how to get it in the wrong way sometimes, by being demanding and a bit pushy, mainly when in the home. Since being back with us, we have put a lot work in on setting clear rules and control around play and Jack has responded really well and now has much better manners! He is a happy, friendly boy with everyone he meets and is also social with other dogs out walking, although h
Rehoming criteria: Jack needs experienced owners who will channel his energy into training. New owners will need to be as strong willed as he can be and set clear rules & boundaries in the home. He was a bit of a bully with the dog in his previous home so could only go to live with a confident, strong willed female. Basically he's a lovely boy who just needs someone who will keep him busy and stimulated, we offer ongoing behaviour & support.

Contact: Ring Hayley Curd on mobile: 07866 262053

Happy Ending: Larch has a new home - a pet home with some fun agility. Apparently they adore him. He settled in immediately. Chalk up another one for Agilitynet!   (04/07/08)

LARCH

History: Larch originally came from the Animal Welfare Trust. He has lived happily with his new family for two years, but his teenage owner is now going abroad to work and the family doesn't feel that they can give him the time and attention that he deserves
Description: Larch is a black and white lurcher. He is a very gentle, good-natured dog who lives happily with cats and children of all ages, including toddlers. He has stayed with a family of four agility dogs when his own family has gone on holiday and settled down happily with them, including going to the occasional agility show as a spectator dog. He likes to play and be involved in whatever is going on around him but doesn't mind being left when necessary. He would make a wonderful fun agility dog that can join in the game while still being very undemanding and easy to live with

Happy Ending: Lucy has been re-homed to a pet home. (08/07/08)

LUCY

History: Lucy came into the centre due to her previous owners feeling they were unable to provide enough time for her due to a family illness. She was originally from a farm where she was brought as an 8-week-old puppy. She has a good history around dogs and strangers, but no experience of young children.
Description: Lucy is a very energetic young Collie. She will need to be kept busy in her new home, both mentally and physically, and she does need further training and guidance. Lucy is sociable around other dogs and would benefit from further socialisation with other dogs. She could possibly live with another older, calm dog pending good introductions here at the centre.
Rehoming criteria: Lucy is looking for a home preferably in the countryside, with owners who can commit time to her energy requirements and further training and provide her with the constructive play and interactions she will greatly benefit from. She could live in a home with teenagers, however visiting younger children would be fine under supervision. She could be left on her own for up to 2 hours at present but this could be gradually increased to a maximum of 4 hours in a day. Lucy will make a wonderful addition to a training minded family wanting a fun, active companion.
Child friendly: Yes, better suited with teenagers.

We are looking for an experienced border collie owner who has time to continue her training.  Lucy is very reactive and is eager to please. Happy Endings: Mattie has gone to a pet home. Valgrays had four calls from the Agilitynet about Mattie. He was sooooo sweet.
 (17/07/08)

MATTIE

History: Mattie was a stray and was about to be PTS having been in the pound for seven days and we stepped in and had him brought to Valgrays.
Description: This little chap has had a terrible existence. His condition proved it. His coat had never seen a brush and it took us five hours to clean him up. He is such a sweetie. He put up with all the cutting, trimming, pulling etc. and not once did he growl or turn his nose up. We called him Mattie because it sums him up. This little chap is now washed and polished, and under all the dirt and matt he is a blue merle. We have shed tears on this little boy. He is great with other dogs, people and children. (More photos of Mattie on our web site.)
Rehoming criteria: A five star home now where he can be spoilt and loved. Mattie would be super for a family pet home. He trots around with us and is so obedient,. His lovely brown eyes were so sad when he came to us but now they are bright and happy.

Happy Ending: Because of Agilitynet, someone has taken Milo for agility.  (17/07/08)

MILO

History: This fabulous pup came from a family home where he was just too much for the owner, a young mum, to cope with. Then she had to return to work due to change in circumstances.
Description: Milo is friendly, affectionate, house trained, good in the car (but can be car sick, but this depends on the car and his travelling position – he has been fine in the Sanctuary car). Good with adults and children (he lived with a baby). Milo can be VERY bouncy, and wants to be on the go and play all day.
Rehoming criteria: Needs to be in home where his on the go attitude is appreciated.

Happy Ending: Mitch will be going to his new home this Sunday. He will be living 5 minutes from the sea so should be enjoying lots of beach walks soon.  (04/07/08)

MITCH

History: Poor Mitch has not had a good start to his life and we are now seeking somebody that will be able to offer him a permanent loving home. Mitch was born deaf, and added to this we think he has been confined in an environment that offered little stimulation. Because of this Mitch amused himself by pouncing shadows on the floor.  At first Mitch did this constantly, but with time and patience he has started to come out of his own little world and now actively seeks interaction with people and other dogs.
Description: Mitch is a delightful young dog. He is very bright and affectionate. He knows how to sit and give a paw, and is responding well to training with food.  He is also learning to respond to hand signals, so he has come a long way from the poor little chap that entered our kennels.
Rehoming criteria: Mitch requires a kind and active home. He is very athletic and with his light weight build and enthusiasm we feel he would go far in agility. Mitch won't be straightforward in a home, but with time and care we think he has a bright future.
Child friendly: Yes
Able to live with cats: He hasn't met any but would probably need to be taught not to chase them
Age: 6 months
Sex: Dog

History: Obie is from an unwanted litter originally from Ireland.
Description: Obie is a black & white Border Collie boy. He is affectionate and loving and has come on leaps and bounds in terms of handling. He has started his housetraining and is very good with other dogs.
Rehoming criteria: Obie loves learning new things and would like a home where he can use his collie brain.

Happy Ending: We are delighted to say that Paddy has now gone to a new home.  (10/07/08)

PADDINGTON (PADDY)

History: Paddington was one of three pups handed in as the owner could not find good homes. His two brothers Sooty and Sweep have found homes, but Paddy is still waiting. Paddy's mum was a very small, rough coated terrier and dad is unknown. All the pups were completely different although the same colourings.
Description: Paddy is a fab looking dog whose pictures do him no justice. He is a beautiful, rich tan with black. He has been living with a number of rescue dogs in a home and his only fault is that he can have issues with his food. He is fed separately but this could be sorted with time and training. Because Paddy lives with a number of rescue dogs, his housetraining will need some one to one. He loves to play, is a busy happy boy but has been overlooked. At a recent dog charity dog show, we were advised that Paddy would make a fantastic agility dog and we should put his details on here. Paddy is very agile which does mean he can gain access to places he shouldn't, like work surfaces and window ledges and he can be a bit of a thief but he is just a pup. We were advised by the agility people that Paddy is currently Small but may make Medium when finished growing.
Rehoming criteria: He will need a home where he would receive further training.
Child friendly: Yes, but probably better with slightly older children as he is very bouncy.
Able to live with cats: He does have a chase instinct so not advised although he is young so could be trained out of this.
Age: 22 weeks

Happy Endings: Pepe has gone to a agility and HTM home (17/07/08)

PEPE

History: Pepe was purchased by the family as a 7 week old pup. She has been much loved by the entire family, but it is with such heavy heart that they are now emigrating and need to find a lovely caring home for Pepe.
Description: Pepe is a lovely slate grey colour and has the most lovely grey eyes to go with it. Pepe is a lovely dog and a typical border collie very energetic and willing to learn.  A happy boisterous collie, Pepe loves being outdoors her greatest game is to hide her chews and cooked bones. She loves her toys and is very obedient and would certainly love to have chance to try agility/obedience.
Rehoming criteria: Someone who would enjoy working and playing with this lovely collie girl.
Child friendly:
Yes,
she is also great with children.
Able to live with cats: Yes.
The family has a cat and she is fine with them.

Apologies to anyone interested in Rex. We had a wrong telephone number.   (04/07/08)

REX

History: Rex had a very troubled start in life as he was kept indoors and never walked or allowed to meet other people or dogs. He was rescued by the local dog warden and came into the shelter at the beginning of November 2007. Since then he has grown in confidence and learned a lot, but still needs work to socialise him with people and dogs. He really doesn't suit kennel life as he has so much energy.
Description: He is a bright and lively dog, quick to learn and eager to please, and very focused on what he is doing. He has learned basic commands while he's been with us. He adores our agility equipment and took to it straight away. He loves to play with balls and especially with Frisbees. When he is absorbed with what he is doing in the play pen he doesn't even notice other dogs, but he does need socialising as he can be quite aggressive towards dogs when he is on the lead. He is unsure of new people, but once he knows you is so affectionate and loving - loves to sit on your lap for cuddles and have his tummy tickled.
Rehoming criteria: We would love to find him a home where he can be loved and develop his potential. We usually rehome within a 30 mile radius, but will accept written references from vets (on headed paper) if new owners are from further away.
Child friendly:
Yes, but not young children. Older children would be okay if experienced with dogs.

SHEILA

History: Sheila and her pups were taken from a farm in Wales by a dog warden. No explanation was given. The pups have all been fostered or rehomed.
Description
: Sheila is a lively black and tan bitch. She is friendly with dogs and people, but has lived out and is not lead trained.
Rehoming criteria: An active home is required.

Happy Ending: Tia has been homed with a family that have other dogs. (07/07/08)

TIA

History: Tia is being rehomed though no fault of her own. Her owner has just found out that she is pregnant and she doesn't think she can cope with a new baby and a puppy with boundless energy.
Description: Tia looks more like a Dalmatian but has collie markings. Tia is a very outgoing dog, with lots of energy. She enjoys going for walks, cycling or swimming. She is a very loving dog and  enjoys company. Tia has started basic training. She is good with other dogs, cats and children. She is  house trained and fully vaccinated. As she has lots of energy and enjoys her exercise we think she would be perfect for agility as she likes to do things that stimulate her mind and make her think.
Rehoming criteria: I would like Tia to go to a loving but active family. A family that enjoys agility and training would be perfect for Tia.

Happy Endings: Toby has been re-homed a month ago. (07/07/08)

TOBY

History: Toby's owners contacted the Dog Aid Society of Scotland because they are no longer able to look after Toby due to a change in personal circumstances.
Description: Toby is a gorgeous black and white Border Collie who originally comes from a farm. He is an intelligent young boy with typical Border Collie traits. He has currently taken to chasing cars so he needs further training and another place to channel his energy. He is very eager to please and full of life so we feel he would make a great agility or possibly flyball dog.
Rehoming criteria: Toby would be suited to an experienced and active home.
He will only be able to be re-homed within Scotland.
Child friendly:
